Whose shoe is this?

I went to WEJ on Thursday to wave goodbye to the buses, and when I walked past our classroom there was one lone shoe forgotten.  I couldn’t bear to have a perfectly good shoe thrown out so I took it home!  If it is your daughter’s shoe, please email me and I will drop it around to you when I’m out and about!

Happy Summer!

Goodbye & Report Cards

Just a reminder that report cards went home with your child today, along with a small something that hopefully they can hang on their wall at home and remember the fun times we had this year in Grade 2.

Thank you for lending me your children this year.  It has been full of smiles, laughter, learning and memories.  I have truly loved teaching each and every one of them, and will miss them dearly.  Please keep in contact and feel free to email me anytime.

I hope you all have a wonderful summer with your families,

Shannon

Moving & Math

Hi all,

As some of you already know, I applied for and got a job at the new Kanata school (the one that is currently being built on Terry Fox).  I will be teaching English/Math to Early Immersion students in Grades 3 and 5.  I’m so excited for this adventure, but it is going to be SO HARD to leave WEJ and your incredible children.  These next few weeks are going to be very tough!  One of the things I will miss most is seeing your children in the halls as they grow and keeping up with them, so I have one request:  please feel free to keep in contact with me (email is best) and let me know how your children are doing.  I LOVE getting updates, hearing about accomplishments, getting the occasional photo and being a help whenever I can.  Recently I attended the Earl of March play where I saw my past little Grade 2 students singing and dancing their hearts out as fully grown Gr 10, 11 and 12 teenagers – almost ten years later!!!  I love staying in contact, and visiting students for important events like this, so please keep me in mind and let me know periodically how your children are doing.

Less than three weeks and we are done for the year… I am both looking forward to summer and soooo sad at the prospect of saying good-bye.

Please check out our math page for our fun chocolate/lego math explorations today!!!

Ramadan and CHEO book fair

Hi all,

Just two announcements:

  1. Ramadan is coming up… if your child is fasting, please send me a quick email (shannon.jorgensen@ocdsb.ca) with any instructions.  Particularly, if your child seems very hot or tired during Ramadan, do you want them to a) have water, b) have a snack or c) call home.  Different families have different preferences, so please let me know yours.  Please also let me know the dates that they are fasting.  I plan to have a separate space for these children in the class at lunch so that they don’t have to be directly in front of food during this time.  Also, they can choose to sit out during gym activities.  Recess is a bit harder, as I am outside on duty with them – but if they are too hot/thirsty outside, they can feel free to tell a teacher on duty and go into the air conditioned office/library.
  2. The CHEO book fair is continuing this week with sale prices of 25c per book.  If your child brings change, they can buy books during 1st recess all week.

Eek – it’s almost June already!!!!  I can’t believe how fast this year has flown by…. sniff sniff!

School Council Meeting Tonight

Meeting TONIGHT!

The School Council is meeting on Monday, May 9th at 6:30pm in the library.  This is the second to last meeting for this school year.  The council will be deciding on how the school funds raised this year will be allocated and spent.  We need at least 3 parents who are not on the council to be in attendance to approve how the money is spent.

Do you want the money raised to go towards outdoor recess equipment?  Library books?  School bus field trips?  Do you have ideas on how the thousands of dollars raised should be spent?  This is the meeting to attend to voice your opinions.  Please come to this meeting.

If you would like to make a suggestion of a topic for tonight’s meeting, we can add it to the agenda.  Send an email to wejcochair@gmail.com.

Math Test/Writing Exemplar

A few new announcements:

  1. Today in your child’s agenda you will find his/her blue math folder.  We will be having a math assessment on Monday, so please review the latest math with your child and return the folder to school on Monday.
  2. We have done a Grade 2 writing exemplar and it has gone home tonight as well.  Please take some time to review it and feel free to keep it at home.  It is a sample of where your child is in writing at this point in Grade 2, with next steps for improvement.
  3. The CHEO used book sale needs books!  Please send in any books your children have outgrown for this amazing cause.  We are collecting now!

Luv2Groove

We are thrilled to announce that Luv2Groove – Dance Education (www.luv2groove.com) will be returning to WEJ to deliver dance lessons to Grades 1- 3 during the week of May 16, 2016.This year’s theme is ‘Groove the Globe’. In this dance unit, the students will be exposed to a variety of dance styles and cultures from around the world. They will learn about West African dance (high energy percussion and storytelling through movement), Afro Urban (a fusion of traditional African dance and hip hop), Latin grooves and/or Bollywood dance (energetic dances shown in popular Indian movies).

Luv2Groove’s mission is to foster the growth and development of dance education through a blending of passions in dance, health and physical education. They enhance the arts, health and physical education curriculum by encouraging students to move, groove and have fun! All activities undertaken during these sessions will be in accordance with OPHEA (Ontario Physical Education Safety Guidelines).

Your child will be participating in four dance sessions at a total cost of $8.00. Please remit payment by Monday, May 9, 2016.

Two Notes

Hi everyone,

Just a reminder that the CHEO Walk-a-Thon permission forms are DUE!  If your child does not bring in the permission form, they will not be able to walk around the community with our class and their friends.  They will have to walk with the kindergarten class in our own yard.  Please bring in the form!

We also have had a lot of parents offer to volunteer!  I *think* we are able to take as many parents as would like to come, but I will check on this.  I will be contacting the parents who have volunteered with more information next week.

Also….

There is an upcoming Used Book Fair for CHEO at our school!

The CHEO fundraising team had such a HUGE success with last year’s used book sale that we are going to do it again!

From May 2nd to May 20th we are encouraging students to “spring clean” their book shelves and bring in good condition books that they have out grown or no longer need.

Then, on Friday May 27th, your child will be able to shop at the used book sale that will be set up in the Library.

Please bring in any picture books, story books, Archie comics, Scholastic books, novel series and poetry sets.  Books will range from 50 cents to a dollar – what a deal!

This sale will be open up to the entire school population and students can shop for “new to them” books!

All proceeds from the sale of these donated books will go to CHEO. Last year we raised almost $700 !!!!

Thank-you for contributing and helping out the little hearts in the hospital!

More updates

Hello all,

There are updates to various pages on our blog (Language – our iTrailers!, Math and Social Studies).  I have not posted anything lately in the “My Child’s Work” page just due to time restraints, but I will post our next writing activity up there in the next few weeks.  There are also just some more general photos on the main page if you click on any of the three pictures (Our Classroom, Our Work, etc).
